The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia began due to the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. This scenario is similar to the Kashmir dispute (war between India and Pakistan). Azerbaijan and Armenia were the part of USSR before the dissolution of USSR. From 1988 both these countries started to fight with each other to capture the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan is a Muslim populated country and Armenia is a Christian populated country. Basically, the
Nagorno-Karabakh region is under the control of Azerbaijan but ethnicity is Armenian of Nagorno-Karabakh regional people. The total area of Nagorno-Karabakh is 4,400 sq. km and the total population
is more than 1,46,000.

The first war period was from 20 February 1988 to 12 May 1994. Armenia won this war along with establishing a line of contact after this war. Armenia gains some territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
From 1994-2019, these border clashes killed more than 3,000 people including civilians and soldiers of both the countries.
Conflict in 2020 started from 27 September 2020 to 10 November 2020. In this war, Azerbaijan recaptured their lands and marked the victory. In this war, more than 4000 were dead (including civilian and soldiers) of both countries.

Russia plays a neutral role as mediator in this conflict because both countries were part of USSR before the dissolution of USSR. Turkey is the main supporter of Azerbaijan. Turkey provides military
helps and diplomatically support to Azerbaijan. Iran plays a neutral role as mediator in this conflict.
Iran preferred for maintaining peace.
Russia is the main arms supplier for both countries.
Turkey, Serbia, Belarus, Canada and Ukraine are small suppliers of Azerbaijan.
China, India, Ukraine, Greece and Serbia are small suppliers of Armenia.
As per analysis the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia, this war is going on basis of religion and ethnicity. Nagorno-Karabakh regional civil people are Armenian by Ethnicity, but the region is controlled by Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh region was the territory of Azerbaijan before the dissolution of USSR. Before dissolution
USSR hand over the Nagorno-Karabakh region to Azerbaijan. After 1988 the dissolution of USSR, Armenia tried to capturing the Nagorno-Karabakh region from Azerbaijan.
